Acoustic Method of Early Detection of Gas Kicks
The acoustic method for early detection of gas kicks works by installing an acoustic device similar to a hydrodynamic sonar and a pressure sensor at the wellhead and by monitoring the signal measured by the pressure sensor. When present, size, velocity and location of the gas kick can be determined from the shape of the reeived signal, allowing to estimate the time of arrival of the gas kick to the well head.
It can help to reduce the risk of explosion of the well and to remove gas kicks with great accuracy. Since you know the location and the estimated time of arrival of the gas kick to the surface, this leaves enough time for evacuation of for introduction of counter measures.
We have a US Patent for this method, already performed preliminary tests and are working on producing a device.
